Born in India and educated at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, Ajay Banga rose through Nestlé, PepsiCo and Citigroup before running Mastercard for a decade, turning it into a major force in digital payments and financial inclusion. Since 2023 he has presided over the World Bank Group with a mandate to make the institution faster and bolder in tackling poverty and climate change, including a flagship effort to bring electricity to hundreds of millions of people across Africa.
He brings a private-sector culture of execution to the world's leading development institution, with numerical targets and impact expected on the scale of entire continents.
