Friedrich Merz

A lawyer from the Sauerland region, Friedrich Merz served in the European Parliament and then in the Bundestag from the 1990s, where he became one of the CDU's leading voices on economic policy. After more than a decade in the private sector, including as chairman of the supervisory board of BlackRock Germany, he returned to politics, took over his party in 2022 and led the conservatives to victory in the 2025 federal election. As chancellor, he leads Europe's largest economy at a time of pressing questions on competitiveness, defense and European cohesion, and has become a central interlocutor for the continent's partners.
