Percival Everett
Time 100 2025. Pulitzer finalist.
Percival Everett, novelist and professor at the University of Southern California, has built over four decades an uncategorizable body of more than thirty books. His novel Erasure inspired the film American Fiction, which won an Academy Award in 2024. With James, a retelling of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of the enslaved Jim, he won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His wit, formal command and reflection on race and language place him among the major voices of contemporary literature.
His work shifts the way American history is read, with a rigor and freedom that reach well beyond literature into global public debate.
