President and chief executive of Nasdaq, Adena Friedman is the first woman to run a major global exchange. She joined Nasdaq as an intern in 1993, rose through its ranks, left to serve as chief financial officer of the investment firm Carlyle, then returned and took charge in 2017. She has transformed a stock market into a global technology company, supplying trading systems, anti-financial-crime software and market data to institutions in dozens of countries, while Nasdaq continues to host the listings of the world's most valuable technology companies.
She redefined what an exchange is in the twenty-first century and showed that a market infrastructure could become a global technology player, led by a woman.
