A corporate lawyer who rose to chair the global law firm Baker McKenzie, Christine Lagarde joined the French government in 2005 and in 2007 became the first woman to serve as finance minister of a G7 country. She led the International Monetary Fund from 2011 to 2019 before taking the presidency of the European Central Bank, again as the first woman in the role.
