A graduate of Zhejiang University, Liang Wenfeng first co-founded High-Flyer, one of China's largest quantitative investment funds, before establishing the DeepSeek laboratory in 2023. In January 2025, the release of its R1 reasoning model, published with open weights and trained for a fraction of the cost of its American rivals, sent shock waves through financial markets and the artificial intelligence industry. Rarely seen in public, he demonstrated that engineering efficiency could matter as much as raw computing power in the race to build frontier models.
Within weeks he altered the economic assumptions of an entire industry: a measurable impact and international reach that few founders achieve so quickly.
