William Ruto became president of Kenya in 2022 after nearly a decade as deputy president, and has since made climate finance the signature of his international diplomacy. Hosting the first Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in 2023, he pushed for a reform of the global financial system and for Africa to be treated as a partner in the green transition rather than a casualty of it. A former minister with a doctorate in plant ecology, he champions a Kenyan grid powered largely by renewable energy.
His ability to rally African leaders around a shared climate agenda and to carry that voice into global forums reflects measurable impact and genuine international reach.
